How To Build a Raised Bed

This video “Building a Raised Bed” provides a step-by-step process for constructing a raised bed, which is highly beneficial when initiating a garden or aiming to minimize time spent wedding. I recommended that the raised bed should not be less than 4 feet wide, ideally around 5 feet wide and 20 feet long. These dimensions make the bed easily reachable from both sides and not to long to walk around it.

Benefits of raised bed:

  • Raised beds is an efficient system that requires fewer resources, produces greater yields, and preserves soil structure.
  • Maintenance becomes easier, making gardening more manageable, and on a larger scale, it facilitates farming.
  • A raised bed is a fresh start, you can fill it with the desired type of soil. This is particularly advantageous when dealing with rocky or chemically contaminated soil. You can easily overcome this problem by introducing clean soil and mixing it with an organic mixture like manure, and compost. This, in turn, fosters the growth of worms and soil flora, enriching the soil with nutrients.
  • Furthermore, a raised bed minimizes the amount of organic matter that needed, as it focuses solely on the area of the raised beds. Pathways get compacted when walking and don’t need organic matter.
  • By avoiding walking on the bed, soil compaction is reduced, aeration increases, allowing for healthier root development.

Aeration and Root Development

• By not walking on the bed, there will be minimum compaction to the soil.  The only compaction that will take place is from rain and it can be minimized by utilizing straw mulch.

•  Deeper roots in the soil, develop healthier plants.
